Enrols for the arts school La Corogne. First drawings of pigeons and corridas.
1897
Opening of El Quarte Gats in Barcelona, a café and meeting place for progressive intellectuals and artists. Wins gold medal for his Science and Charity in Madrid.
1899
Friendship with Jaime Sabartès, who later becomes his longstanding secretary.
1900
First travel to Paris.
1901
Exhibition at Ambroise Vollard's in Paris. Beginning of the Blue Period.
1902
Returns to Barcelona. Several journeys to Paris.

Moves to Paris permanently, lives at the Bateau-Lavoir. Relationship with Fernande Olivier. Etches The Frugal Repast.

Jean Cocteau introduces Picasso to Diaghilev.
Picasso works on the production of Parade for the Ballets Russes.

Travels to Rome, Naples, Pompei with Olga Kokhlova. Meets Strawinsky. First Night of Parade at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris.

Marries Olga Kokhlova.
1920
Picassos and Olga Kokhlova's son Paolo is born.
1922
Les Démoiselles d’Avignon is sold for 25.000 Francs.
1924
First monograph by Pierre Reverdy.
1925
Participates in the Surrealist exhibition in Paris.
1927
Secret relationship with under-aged Marie-Thérèse Walter.
1930
Buys Boisgeloup Castle. Starts etchings that later become known as Suite Vollard. Its sujets are: Art, love and gender issues. The figure of the Minotaur turns into the Alter Ego of the artist, the corrida becomes a symbol for the battle of the sexes.
1931
Exhibitions in Paris and London: Thirty Years of Pablo Picasso.
1933
Collages and drawings for the first edition of Minotaure.
1935
Picasso's lover Marie-Thérèse Walter gives birth to daughter Maya. Picasso leaves Marie-Thérèse. Creates the etching Minotauromachia which remains the only work of "the worst time of my life" (Picasso)
1936
Spanish Civil War. Picasso sides with the Republican government, etches the anti-fascist series: The Dream and Lie of Franco.
Relationship with Dora Maar.
1937
Paints Guernica for the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris International Exposition.
1939
Major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: Picasso. Forty Years of his Art.
1941
Remains in Paris despite the German occupation; writes Desire Caught by the Tail, a play in six acts.
1943
Relationship with Françoise Gilot.
1944
Picasso becomes a member of the French Communist Party .
Retrospective Salon d’Automne (Salon de la Libération).
1945
Begins to work intensively with lithography, prints at Fernand Mourlot's in Paris.
1946
Major retrospective at MOMA, New York: Picasso. Fifty Years of his Art.
1947
First ceramics in Vallauris. Mainly with arcadian sujets like heads of fauns, later corridas are added. Françoise gives birth to son Claude.
1948
First original poster to advertise products from Vallauris.
Until 1964 Picasso will create one to two different posters for each summer season.
1949
Louis Aragon chooses the lithography of a white pigeon for the poster of the first World Peace Congress in Paris. This sujet reaches unheard of popularity. Picasso calls his daughter Paloma (pigeon). Her mother is Françoise Gilot.
1954
Death of Derain and Matisse. Exhibition at the Maison de la Pensée Française.
1955
Olga Kokhlova dies.
Retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
Henri-Georges Clouzo films the documentary film Le Mystère Picasso.
Picasso exhibitions in Cologne, Munich and Hamburg.
1960
Retrospective at the Tate Gallery in London.
1961
Aged 80 Picasso marries Jaqueline Roque in Vallauris.
1962
Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: Picasso. An American Tribute.
1963
Death of Georges Braque and Jean Cocteau.
Opening of the PicassoMuseum in Barcelona.
1965
Françoise Gilot and Carlton Lake publish My Life with Picasso.
Picasso falls ill and is operated on.
1966
Death of André Breton. Retrospective 'Hommage à Pablo Picasso' at the Grand and Petit Palais, Paris. Works on numerous erotic etchings characteristic of his later work.
1971
Picasso is the first living artists honoured to be exhibited at the Louvre.
1973
Picasso dies on the 8th of April in Mougins near Cannes.
