Pablo Picasso

  • 1881 Pablo Ruiz Picasso is born in Málaga on 25 October. His father José Ruiz Blasco is a drawing teacher.
  • 1892 Enters drawing class at La Corogne art school. First drawings of pigeons and bullfights are made.
  • 1897 Opens the 4 Gats in Barcelona, where progressive intellectuals and artists meet. He receives a gold medal in Madrid for the academically painted picture Science and Compassion.
  • 1899 Friendship with Jaime Sabartès, his later secretary for many years.
  • 1900 First trip to Paris.
  • 1901 Exhibition at Ambroise Vollard, Paris. Beginning of the blue period.
  • 1902 Returns to Barcelona. Several trips to Paris.
  • 1904 Now lives permanently in Paris in the Bateau-Lavoir. Friendship with Fernande Olivier. Produces the etching The Frugal Meal.
  • 1905/06 Produces the etching series Saltimbanques. The pink period.

  • 1918 Marries Olga Koklova.
  • 1920 Picasso and Olga Koklova’s son Paolo is born.
  • 1922 Les Demoiselles d’Avignon sold for 25,000 francs.
  • 1924 First monograph by Pierre Reverdy.
  • 1925 Participates in the Surrealist exhibition in Paris.
  • 1927 Secret friendship with Marie-Thérèse Walter, still a minor.
  • 1930 Buys the chateau of Boisgeloup. Begins etchings, which are later grouped together in the Suite Vollard. Her themes: Art, love, and the conflict between the sexes. The figure of Minotaur becomes the artist’s alter ego, the bullfight a synonym for the battle of the sexes.
  • 1931 Exhibitions in Paris and London: Thirty Years of Pablo Picasso.
  • 1933 Collage and drawings for the first issue of the magazine Minotaure.
  • 1935 Picasso’s mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter gives birth to a daughter: Maya. Picasso leaves Marie-Thérèse. The etching Minotauromachie is created as the only work during the “worst period of my life” (Picasso).
  • 1936 Spanish Civil War. Picasso declares his support for the republican government, etches the anti-Franco sequence of pictures: Franco’s Dream and Lie. Friendship with Dora Maar.
  • 1937 Picasso paints the anti-war picture Guernica for the Spanish pavilion at the Paris World’s Fair.
  • 1939 Major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: Picasso. Forty Years of his Art.
  • 1941 He remains in German-occupied Paris; writes the drama in six acts How to Grab Wishes by the Tail.
  • 1943 Picasso becomes friends with François Gilot.
  • 1944 Picasso becomes a member of the French Communist Party.Retrospective at the Salon d’Automne (Salon de la Libération).
  • 1945 Begins to work intensively with lithography, prints at Fernand Mourlot, Paris.
  • 1946 Major retrospective at MOMA, New York: Picasso. Fifty Years of his Art.
  • 1947 He creates his first ceramics in Vallauris. They mainly show Arcadian motifs such as faun heads, and later bullfight depictions. François gives birth to their son Claude.
  • 1948 The first original poster is created as an advertisement for products from Vallauris. Until 1964 Picasso will design one or two new posters for each summer season.
  • 1949 Louis Aragon selects the lithograph of a white dove for the poster of the first World Peace Congress in Paris. This motif becomes extremely popular. Picasso names his daughter Paloma (dove). Her mother is François Gilot.
  • 1954 Death of Derain and Matisse. Exhibition at the Maison de la Pensée Française.
  • 1955 Olga Koklova dies.retrospective at the Musée des Arts décoratifs, Paris. Henri-Georges Clouzo makes the documentary film Mystère Picasso. Picasso exhibitions in Cologne, Munich and Hamburg.
  • 1960 Retrospective at the Tate Gallery in London.
  • 1961 Picasso marries Jaqueline Roque in Vallauris at the age of 80.

  • 1965 François Gilot and Carlton Lake publish the book Life with Picasso. Picasso falls ill and undergoes surgery.
  • 1966 Death of André Breton. Retrospective Hommage à Pablo Picasso at the Grand and Petit Palais, Paris. Numerous strongly erotic etchings are produced. They are characteristic of his later work.
  • 1971 Picasso is the first living artist to have the honour of being exhibited in the Louvre.
  • 1973 Picasso dies on 8 April in Mougins near Cannes.
