on paper

Nikola Dimitrov’s works on paper reflect a wealth of variations on musical compositions. They typically consist of several parts, each translating the respective compositional principle – with its characteristics in terms of texture, tempo, key and time signature or articulation – into a pictorial language.

The works on the individual compositions are generally to be regarded as a coherent whole. An experience of rhythm finds expression in the choice of colour and in the recurring rows of strokes superimposed horizontally, vertically and diagonally, giving rise to a wide range of structures and patterns that are founded on a superordinate framework. Rather than being one-to-one renderings of the musical composition, the paintings on paper reflect analogies through a visual language.
