Braque – Chagall – Picasso
The modern illustrated book, in which text and image are equally important, has a long tradition. More than 100 years ago, the Parisian publisher Ambroise Vollard encouraged artists to design books for him. The result was magnificent works with original graphics, which were published in small editions.
Among the earliest works on display are Marc Chagall’s 1928 etchings of La Fontaine’s fables. These black and white works stand in contrast to the magnificent color woodcuts on Chagall’s own poems “Poèmes” from 1968.
Georges Braque is represented with the work “Si je mourais la bas”, created one year before his death in 1962. He also chose the technique of the color woodcut for this work.
The spectrum of books illustrated by Pablo Picasso on display ranges from Balzac’s “Le Chef d’oeuvre inconnu” to “Carmen” and “La Tauromaquia”, perhaps the artist’s most beautiful illustrated book. Also on display are some very rare original prints that are only included with the special editions.
