Over the last three decades, Rita Rohlfing has created an enormous oeuvre. Gradually and in well-considered, logical steps, she has transferred her traditionally flat pictorial art into three-dimensional space. She is an artist who plays with the spaces and architectures given to her in her presentations and is able to create illusions and constantly changing visual stimuli with her art.
Thus one encounters the so-called untitled spaces with paintings on aluminum panels with a barely perceptible porous surface structure. These works, with their extremely sharp and obtuse angles, seem to float on the wall. They are in dialogue with the color space objects, wall objects made of frosted acrylic glass, in which the paint is on the inside. Both these works impress with a fascinating interplay of quiet rational rigor and at the same time irritating effect. My work is about the dissolution of the material,” explains the artist. Rita Rohlfing’s works are not completely transparent.
